It started with a tree

In 2009, one of the principle partners of Little Tree watched a small jungle in the heart of Legian, Bali, get uprooted to make room for a resort, right beside his home. 

One small plant barely survived—a tiny tree that was whisked away to safety in the garden at the back of our Sari Organik Café: The Little Tree Bali green building materials and supplies store had its name.

From the beginning, Little Tree Bali was envisioned as a store that would ‘walk the talk’ in terms of green design, setting an example for sustainable green buildings in tropical climates. 

The starting point for this building came from an unlikely place—a former car repair shop and a tropical fish farm. Stripping down everything but the foundations, we rebuilt the structure with the same green building materials that are now on sale at the shop.

We also wanted our green building materials store to be a place for like-minded people to come together and discuss green issues. From this idea emerged initial designs for an organic café and a seminar room where every week, organizations and community groups gather to push Bali’s sustainability agenda forward.
